Radiology procedures made simple

MRI

In an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) procedure, the technician uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce images.  This technique can look “through” hard bones to examine underlying soft tissue (muscles, fat, and internal organs) without the use of x-rays.  An MRI can create images of tissue from any angle or direction, so it is valuable to detect differences between normal and abnormal tissues, tissue damage and problems with blood flow.  It is often used to detect damage in the soft tissues, joints, bones, brain or spinal cord.  Occasionally a special dye will be given through an IV, but this is usually not necessary.
