The Cardiac Rehabilitation program at Pattie A. Clay Regional Medical Center combines prescriptive exercise training with coronary risk factor modification in patients with established heart disease. The goals of cardiac rehab are to improve functional capacity, alleviate or lessen activity-related symptoms, reduce disability, and identify and modify coronary risk factors. The ultimate goal is to restore and maintain an individual’s optimal physiological, psychological, social and vocational status, and to reduce morbidity and mortality due to cardiovascular illness. Cardiac Rehabilitation is standard care that should be integrated into the overall treatment plan for patients after a heart event.
The Cardiac Rehab Center provides:
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE CARDIAC REHAB PROGRAM
The Cardiac Rehab program at Pattie A. Clay Regional Medical Center is equipped with an outstanding staff and full complement of state-of-the-art exercise equipment and takes place in a comfortable, relaxed and contemporary setting.
Our Phase II (beginning phase) Cardiac Rehab program is an outpatient service that begins within four to six weeks following the patient’s discharge from the hospital. It involves three sessions per week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and usually continues for twelve weeks.. The sessions usually last approximately 1 – 1 ½ hours and are offered four times per day, two morning and two afternoon sessions. The program lasts from six to twelve weeks, depending on the number of visits authorized by the insurance provider.
The program uses a variety of exercise equipment to condition and maintain heart endurance with close staff supervision and telemetry (EKG) monitoring. Patients have access to private lockers, towels, juice/water and snacks. Patients also take part in weekly educational classes with the various treatment team members on a variety of topics specifically geared to heart patients.
Our Phase III (maintenance) Cardiac Rehab program bridges the gap between the outpatient, monitored Phase II program and the start of a home fitness regimen. It is similar to the Phase II program but Phase III patients exercise more independently and are monitored based on patient need. Once a patient feels comfortable on his own, he/she may choose to exercise at home or may choose to continue doing Phase III in our Cardiac Rehab Center. Insurance companies do not provide benefits for Phase III Cardiac Rehab and patients are charged a nominal monthly fee to continue their exercise regimen at our facility.
TREATMENT: Our Cardiac Rehab staff takes pride in giving individual attention and emotional support to recovering heart patients. A cardiologist provides medical direction to our program, meeting with the staff on a regular basis to monitor patient’s progress and make recommendations for changes in their exercise regimen. the current Medical Director is Glenn Morris, DO. A registered nurse with special cardiac rehab training coordinates all services and informs the patient’s physician(s) of any situation that is deemed to need medical intervention. An exercise physiologist provides training on the exercise equipment and assists with the overall cardiac rehab program. Other team members that provide consultations for patients include a physical therapist, a dietitian, social worker, pharmacist and clinical psychologist. This experienced team is dedicated to providing personal attention and quality care.
HOW DO PATIENTS ENROLL IN CARDIAC REHAB? A referral from a physician is required for enrollment. Any physician, not necessarily a cardiologist, can refer a patient. If your physician is not aware of our program, he/she may call us and we will be more than happy to send them information and our referral procedures. If you do not have a physician, we would be glad to assist you in finding one.
