The Nursery Experience

We welcome and encourage questions. Our” baby specific” take home instructions, as well as nursing assistance, are designed to send you home, comfortable and confident with your newborn.

Our nursery is a locked unit and we have other security measures in place.

Some of the services our nursery offers: internet baby photos, hearing screening, Hepatitis B vaccines and metabolic screening. The staff is all cross trained to assist breast feeding mothers.

We are considered a Level 1 nursery and are able to care for all but the sickest babies. Should an infant have difficulties after birth, our board certified pediatricians have a long time working relationship with University of

Kentucky neonatal unit and do not hesitate to transfer an infant, should the need arise.

The Women’s Care Center nursery staff provides family friendly care to get every newborn off to a safe and healthy start. Well babies can be in mother’s room as long as you wish, with occasional trips to the nursery for pediatrician exams and a daily weigh in. Our nursery staff will be happy to take baby to the nursery if you want a nap, or to go for a walk.

Shortly after birth, your newborn will be transferred to our nursery, for stabilization. Newborns have special needs that require nursing observation. They must be kept warm, under a radiant warmer until they are stable enough to have a bath and come to mother’s room. The time it takes for a newborn to warm up, depends on the individual baby.

Sometimes it takes 40 minutes, sometimes it takes 4 hours. Your infant’s health and safety is our most important concern. The infant is assessed by our expert nursery nurses and as soon as the baby is stable and safety teaching with the family is completed, your baby will be brought to you on the Post Partum (after delivery) wing.
