Alice Jane Ballew Honored on National Philanthropy Day

Lexington, KY—Alice Jane Ballew of Richmond received the Outstanding Community Philanthropy award in a November luncheon celebration in recognition of her philanthropic contributions to the Richmond community.   Ms. Ballew was nominated by the Pattie A. Clay Foundation.

In bestowing the honor, Master of Ceremonies Marvin Bartlett of WTVQ-TV, commented “Alice Jane Ballew has been involved in Pattie A. Clay Regional Medical Center for as long as anyone can remember, having served on the hospital board for over 40 years!  Her dedication and attentiveness to the operations of the hospital have not waned over the years, either. An eager volunteer for many important committees of the board, she currently holds the position of president of the Pattie A. Clay Association.  Alice Jane is the hospital’s unofficial historian laureate, patiently teaching others the importance of celebrating tradition while planning for the future.”  A librarian and farmer by trade, Alice Jane also taught Sunday School for many years and continues to be a faithful arts patron.

When Pattie A. Clay Foundation was formed, Alice Jane became a founding board member.  As Bartlett explained, “Not only does she financially support the foundation and hospital, but she is successful in encouraging her friends and acquaintances to do the same.”  Alice Jane is particularly interested in woman’s health, and worked tirelessly to raise funds to renovate the hospital’s woman’s care center.  Most recently she gave the Foundation a tremendous boost by helping establish a charitable gift annuity program—and making the first gift into that fund. Charitable gift annuities allow donors to contribute cash, real estate, securities or other assets to charity in exchange for fixed annual payments, often at much higher yields than with commercial investments.

The Outstanding Community Philanthropy awards are part of National Philanthropy Day which annually celebrates those who have made a significant contribution of time and resources to non-profit organizations in order to enhance the quality of life in our communities.  National Philanthropy Day is organized locally each year by the Bluegrass Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
