For the tenth year in a row the Mammography Department at Pattie A. Clay Regional Medical Center has received a perfect 100% on its recent quality standards survey, conducted annually by the Food and Drug Administration.  In reacting to the evaluation report, radiology director, Steve Wells commented, “Our goal is to provide the very best in mammography services for our patients. It is gratifying that our regulating agencies recognize these efforts again this year.  Our mammogram technologists are to be commended for their extraordinary efforts in maintaining a perfect score year after year.”

According to the FDA, the quality of mammography at a facility is acutely affected by both the qualifications of the professionals who provide mammograms and the equipment used to produce them. The FDA reviews staff credentials and training for radiologists and technologists including initial qualification requirements, academic preparation, certification by certain FDA-approved boards and/or licensing by a State, and initial mammography-specific training and experience. Furthermore, personnel must obtain 8 hours of training in any new mammographic modality before they can independently provide services in that new modality.

The annual inspection process also assures that equipment is maintained in the best possible operating condition. To assure that mammography services maintain high quality, a medical physicist annually inspects the equipment to ensure that it functions as intended by its design, both initially and after being repaired and to ensure that the equipment continues to function dependably, as designed, throughout its lifetime.
