Employers in today’s society have ever increasing
responsibilities to ensure the safety and health of their employees. Employers
with progressive drug testing programs are sending a strong message that they
care about their employees’ safety and health on and off the job.
Employees under the influence of illicit drugs
can harm themselves, fellow co-workers, and even the general public…yes, even
the general public. Consider the possibilities if a person servicing the brakes
on your vehicle comes to work under the influence of drugs, or a healthcare
worker administering medications to your loved one after smoking marijuana, or a
tractor trailer driver using cocaine while driving down I-75? Would you feel
comfortable with any of these situations? This is one of the many reasons why
drug testing in the workplace is not only warranted, it is required.
The Department of Transportation (DOT) has
mandated drug testing requirements for drivers that possess a Commercial Drivers
License. These requirements help protect everyone on the road from a truck
driver operating under the influence. Many companies such as day care centers,
factories, religious organizations, extended care facilities, hospitals, and
many other businesses have implemented drug-free workplace policies.
A solid drug testing program can be effective in
catching users as well as deterring others from partaking in illicit drug
use. The Occupational Medicine Center is committed to providing a drug free
workplace for our safety as well as yours. We have capable and knowledgeable
staff that can assist you in developing a drug and alcohol testing program for
your company.
